Save Money with Flyer Shells

by Elaine Fogel

Every time you send out a flyer announcing an event, a sales promotion, a fundraiser or meeting, are you using a standardized shell or do all your flyers look different?

If you can answer "yes" to any of the following questions, it may be time for a flyer shell that better reflects your brand "look."

è Does the individual who designs your flyers have little graphic design experience?

è Do you print your flyers in black on neon-colored paper stock to attract attention?

è Do you sometimes print your flyers on your photocopy machine?

è Do you use clip art in your flyers?

è Do you use different font styles each time?

Your business or organizational flyers and announcements are communication vehicles are part of your brand, and ideally should be professional in appearance and consistent with your other marketing collateral. It can belittle your credibility if you're sending out anything less.

So what's a flyer shell?

You might be familiar with the colored, themed stationery that's available in many office stores. Those sheets of paper have colored graphics along the border of the page to allow you to print information on the inside.

A customized flyer shell is similar. It's a professionally-designed page that has your logo, brand colors and look and can be printed in the same way that you print on your letterhead. Often it can incorporate photo or other graphic treatment.

Having a shell designed gives you a professional look with the flexibility to print small or large quantities whenever you need them. Once you have the design complete, you can print flyer shells in large quantities to capitalize on the low cost of offset printing. That gives you a low cost per sheet. And you're only paying for professional graphic design once, not for each flyer.

Use the shells in the same manner as you would your letterhead. Lay out the meeting, sale or event information in your business or organization’s standard font style, ensuring you've accounted for the margins of your shell. Then you have the option of printing a few using your laser or inkjet printer in-house, or sending it out to a local print shop for larger quantities.

If you have a graphic designer on staff, s/he can create a shell template for your company or organization. If not, give us a call and we can help. 602-380-7230.
