Call-A-Dad provides rides for those who imbibe too much

Jim Walker often speaks at victim-impact panels and schools about the dangers of drinking and driving.

He tells the story of how his 17-year-old son, Tyson Wilkes, was killed by a drunken driver in June 2004.

Walker said he wanted to do even more to curb drinking and driving. The result is Call-A-Dad.

This service provides a ride home for people who may have had a little too much to drink and need to get home. Call-A-Dad drivers will ferry these individuals home in their own cars. It's set to launch the week before New Year's Day.

Just in time for New Year's Eve, a new designated driver service is launching in the Valley to give party goers a safe ride home in their own cars.

Call-A-Dad began service Wednesday and will continue beyond the holidays. It's the creation of Jim Walker, a Phoenix-area businessman whose 17-year-old son Tyson was killed by a drunk driver in 2004. The idea was conceived to save lives and prevent unnecessary injury or death to those who drink alcohol away from home.

"Our mission is to prevent tragedies by providing an alternative that people will choose," Walker said. "Most people really do need their cars with them the next day."
